Morphology: Gram-positive rod

Habitat: Predominant friendly bacteria in the human gastrointestinal tract and female vagina. Healthy intestines have several trillion of these bacteria. It is found in processed dairy foods and is sold in health food stores as a probiotic.

Disease or illness: It does not cause illness. It is call a probiotic because it counteracts the damage done to the intestines by antibiotics. It also produces lactase to help with digestion. It helps to prevent vaginal yeast infection.

Healthy uses: Replaces the friendly intestinal bacteria destroyed by antibiotics; aids digestion and helps suppress disease-causing bacteria
